The world’s tallest woman, Yao Defen, has died in eastern China. She was 39. Her death was confirmed Wednesday by a government official in her county who gave only his surname, Liu.
Ms Yao was listed by the Guinness World Records as the World’s Tallest Woman, standing at an intimidating 7 feet, 7 inches tall. She passed away on the morning of November 13 in the house she shared with her mother in Shitang village in eastern China, according to Anhui News, a local news website.
The cause of her death was not specified, but the local Xin’an newspaper Evening News said in a report that she suffered from gigantism, caused by a tumor lodging in her pituitary gland and increasing the level of her growth hormone. They added that she played basketball since her younger days, and that she was 6 feet and 7 inches (200 centimetres) tall by the age of 15.
