Update 12.55 pm PT:
2DAY FM has just closed down their Facebook page.
Mel Greig and Christian Michael, the two Australian DJs behind the Kate Middleton hospital prank have been banned from air till further notice. This is as a result of the backlash of the stunt triggered by the death of the hospital nurse they tricked, in an apparent suicide this morning.
The nurse, identified as Jacinta Saldanha, was found dead at an address near King Edward VII hospital, where she worked, around 9:30am. Ever since the news broke out about her death, the social accounts of the two, as well as the Facebook page of the 2Day FM radio station where they work have been hit with a barrage of angry messages. Eventually both were forced to close down their Twitter accounts.
The Sydney station management has released a statement:
‘Southern Cross Austereo (SCA) and 2Day FM are deeply saddened by the tragic news of the death of the nurse, Jacintha Saldanha from King Edward V11 Hospital and we extend our deepest sympathies to her family, and all that have been affected by this situation around the world.
‘CEO Rhys Holleran has spoken with the presenters, they are both deeply shocked, and at this time we have agreed that they not comment about the circumstances.
‘SCA and the hosts have decided that they will not return to their radio show, until further notice out of respect for what can only be described as a tragedy.’
The duo had apologized earlier about the prank:
‘We were very surprised that our call was put through. We thought we’d be hung up on as soon as they heard our terrible accents.
‘We’re very sorry if we’ve caused any issues and we’re glad to hear that Kate is doing well.’
ENTmania! will keep updating as more details show.
