It has emerged that Jacintha Saldanha, the nurse who took her life because of the royal prank call made by Australian DJs Michael Christian and Mel Greig, had tried to kill herself twice last December before the fateful prank call.
According to reports from Indian newspapers, the first suicide attempt was when she overdosed prescription pills during her family’s visit. She was rushed to the hospital where she received treatment but barely 9 days later, she attempted a second suicide by jumping from a building.
Because of that, she spent several days in intensive care before receiving psychiatric treatment and given a prescription course of powerful antidepressant drugs for nine months. Her family was even warned that it is possible that she would commit suicide again.
Her family said that she was so ashamed of the prank call that she never told her husband of the call until her death, despite speaking to them on phone severally.
‘The first her husband knew that she was the victim of the hoax call was when police told him she was dead. Nobody in the family knew,’ said her younger brother Naveen Saldanha, 42. ‘They spoke several times that week but she did not tell him or the kids anything about it.’
Before this revelation, her family had claimed that she never had any depression issues.
Mel Greig and Michael Christian may face charges of obtaining sensitive information by deception, and 2Day FM too for broadcasting it without the permission of those involved, this according to police.
