Universal Music Group, the record label of stars like Rihanna. Justin Beiber and Nicki Minaj have come under the hammer of YouTube for ‘faking’ their billions of video views. The website stripped them of over 1 billion views and left only five non-music videos for them on their official channel.
Universal was not alone in the crackdown: Sony got the second hardest kick with over 800 million views canceled with three videos left. Britney TV lost over 462 million views, while Michael Jackson lost over 280 million views.
This crackdown was conducted to punish those who breached YouTube’s view count policy. You know, some hackers have found a way of adding unreal video views and likes on the Tube to boost popularity and in extension, money.
Sources from the record labels are blaming the situation on the fact that their videos have found their way into other channels. All the same, this is a huge financial blow, as YouTube is the most important medium of promoting videos.
Other channels affected were those belonging to Beyonce, Chris Brown, Jordin Sparks, Shakira, Jennifer Lopez and Taylor Swift. Many of their videos were also deleted.
Ouch! That must have hurt.
