Official reports say that up to 232 people were killed in the fire that broke out at Kiss Night club in Santa Maria, Brazil. The fire reportedly started at around 2:00 am Sunday morning at the acoustic insulation of the club.
Most of the dead died from smoke inhalation, while the rest died as a result of the stampede that occurred as revelers tried to escape from the burning building.
Guido de Melo, a state fire official, told reporters that abut 2,000 people were in the club at the time of the fire, an excess, considering the fact that the building’s maximum capacity is just 1,000. All the same, the club is often overcrowded – especially on weekends, when the number can reach 3,000.
‘This overcrowding made it difficult for people to leave, and according to the information we have, the security guards kept people from leaving the building,’ Guido said.
Also a pyrotechnics show was going on at the time of the fire, though officials are not saying that it was the cause of the fire.
This is happening at a time when the Brazilian summer holiday has come to an end and students are relaxing before heading to school tomorrow.
