British superstar Dido has finally come out of hiding after 5 years … and has prepared her comeback album Safe Trip Home, set to be released March 4.
The Life For Rent singer said she had been working on the album since 2010, but she then got pregnant and decided to keep it private. ‘I had it all nearly finished in 2010 and was ready to surprise everyone … then I got pregnant and had a baby boy, Stanley,’ she said.
The 41-year old also said she recorded most of the songs during her pregnancy.
‘I recorded almost all my vocals while I was pregnant,’ she says. ‘My brother knew but I didn’t tell anyone else. And I was feeling absolutely awful. All I could eat was egg sandwiches but nobody noticed anything was up.
‘Singing when you feel as if you’re about to throw up isn’t fun, but it was interesting. I also recorded a lot of the material in the weeks just before Stanley was born, when he was kicking like crazy inside me.
It got to the point where I thought I was going to fall over. As I got closer to giving birth, I was so breathless that I could barely get through a line. Never mind singing, I couldn’t get up the stairs.’
Asked why she is rarely seen on the red carpet, Dido said she needed her privacy to write meaningful songs.
‘I’ve never promoted my life, because having privacy allows me to put more into my songs,’ she says.
‘If people know too much about you, your songs become diary entries, and I want to avoid that. It’s easier to write when you’re actually living a life. I don’t want to write about being a pop star on tour. That’s just not interesting.
‘There’s a difference between success and fame. Success is people hearing my music and liking it. Fame is different. You can be famous for all sorts of reasons, not all of them good.’
Dido’s first two albums No Angel (1999) and Life For Rent (2003) sold over 30 million copies, making her one of Britain’s best-selling female artistes of all time. Her comeback single No Freedom will be released February 24.
