Olympian Oscar Pistorius was today granted bail after a lengthy ruling that lasted for about two hours.
Magistrate Desmond Nair granted him bail set at $28,500, saying that Oscar is not a flight risk, that is, there is no way he can jump bail because he is a double amputee and his artificial legs can trigger airport security alarms. Besides, the prosecution could not prove that Oscar has a propensity for violence, meaning that he is not a dangerous man.
This decision drew applause and cheers from his family and friends in the courtroom.
Oscar is facing murder charges for gunning down his girlfriend Raven Steenkamp in his bathroom. His defense counsel is advocating that the charge be reduced to ‘culpable homicide,’ as his client did not have the intent to kill his girlfriend but thought he was dealing with an intruder. ‘It was a tragic mistake,’ the defense counsel said.
