Iconic Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez has died. He was 58.
Vice President Nicolas Maduro broke the news Tuesday, and was fighting back tears as he did so:
‘We have received the toughest and tragic information that… Comandante President Hugo Chavez died today at 16:25 (20:55 GMT), after a hard-fought battle with an illness for almost two years.’
Chavez has been battling cancer for over a year, undergoing several operations in China. His illness prevented him from taking the oath of office in October for his fourth term after defeating opposition leader Henrique Capriles at the polls.
The legendary president was an outspoken critic of the US and a self-proclaimed socialist and revolutionary, which endeared him to the Venezuelan people and much of Latin America.
Seven days of national mourning has been declared in his honor.
