Olympic and Paralympics star Oscar Pistorius is free once again to travel overseas, because a judge has lifted his travel ban by taking away the bail condition restricting his movement. Pistorius, who is facing trial for murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp last month, is also free to participate in track events by virtue of this development.
At Pretoria’s North Gauteng High Court today, Judge Bert Bam ruled that Pistorius’ passport can now be handled by his lawyer. He was told to report his itinerary a week before leaving and hand his travel documents back over to his lawyer within 24 hours of returning to South Africa. He is also free to drink alcohol and to return to the scene of the crime.
This ruling is a victory for Pistorius’ legal team, who had appealed against his bail conditions. His family insists that the Paralympian is not suicidal.
Pistorius shot and killed his girlfriend in his home on Valentine’s Day. He told the court that he thought she was an intruder and tried to revive her, but could not.
