Lil’ Wayne has suffered the same fate as Rick Ross – he has been dropped by soda giant Mountain Dew over ill-advised lyrics.
Wayne had come under fire since February over a rap verse he dropped on the song Karate Chop, where he compared the beating of civil rights martyr Emmett Till to rough sex. The offending lines are, ‘Pop a lot of pain pills, ’bout to put rims on my skateboard wheels … beat that p***y up like Emmett Till.’
Emmett Till was just 14 when he was beaten beyond recognition, shot and dumped in a river after he was accused of flirting with a white woman in Mississippi back in 1955.
Till’s family had taken offence to the lyrics and blasted Wayne for it. Wayne issued a letter of ‘apology’ to the family which reads in part:
‘… It has come to my attention that lyrics from my contribution to a fellow artist’s song has deeply offended your family. I would like to take a moment to acknowledge your hurt, as well as the letter you sent to me via your attorneys.
‘As a father myself, I cannot imagine the pain that your family has had to endure…I have tremendous respect for those who paved the way for the liberty and opportunities that African-Americans currently enjoy.’
But Emmett’s family rejected the letter, saying that it ‘falls short of an apology.’
