A Saudi Arabian court has sentenced two men to a total of 8 years in jail with 500 whip lashes for converting a woman to Christianity and helping her flee the country.
According to the Saudi Gazette, one of the men, a Lebanese, was sentenced to 6 years in prison with 300 lashes for converting the woman, while the other, a Saudi native, was sentenced to 2 years with 200 lashes for helping the woman escape the country via Bahrain.
The case emerged last year after the woman’s family complained that she had been ‘brainwashed’ by colleagues at the insurance company where she worked and that they had helped her leave Saudi Arabia via Bahrain on false documents. The woman, known simply as Maryam or to locals as the Al- Khobar girl, was granted asylum in Sweden.
Both men have challenged the verdict and will appeal, the newspaper reported.
FYI: It is against the law in Saudi Arabia for Muslims to convert to other religions, especially Christianity. Proselytizing for other religions and practicing other religions openly is also illegal.
