Nelson Mandela’s health has deteriorated and he is now in ‘critical condition’, the South African government has announced.
The 94-year old apartheid hero and first black president of South Africa was hospitalized in June 8 for a recurring lung infection but on Sunday, the office of South African president Jacob Zuma released a statement saying that he was told by hospital authorities that the elder statesman’s condition had become critical in the past 24 hours.
‘The doctors are doing everything possible to get his condition to improve and are ensuring that Madiba is well-looked after and is comfortable. He is in good hands,’ Zuma said in the statement.
Mandela’s wife Grace Machel also met Zuma at the hospital, where they discussed the former leader’s deteriorating condition.
Zuma is asking for prayers for Mandela, his family and the medical team attending him.
