Jennifer Lopez is under fire for performing at the birthday party of the president of Turkmenistan – who is among the world’s most oppressive leaders according to Human Rights Watch.
Jennifer Lopez on Saturday performed for Turkmenistan president Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov in a lavish ceremony to celebrate his birthday – even going as far as singing ‘Happy Birthday Mr President’. But today her rep explained that she wouldn’t have done that had she known about the government’s human rights abuse history.
‘This was not a government sponsored event or political in nature,’ J.Lo’s rep said in a statement. ‘The event was vetted by her representatives, had there been knowledge of human right issues of any kind, Jennifer would not have attended.’
