Two recent soccer matches were played in Nigeria’s Amateur League division … and the scorelines were too jaw-dropping to be true … and too fantastic to be entered into the Guinness Book of World Records.
According to local reports, amateur side Plateau United Feeders produced a mind-boggling 79-0 victory over Akurba FC while Police Machine FC demolished Babayaro FC 67-0. These clubs were vying for a spot at the Nigerian Nationwide League Division 3 and were in dire need for a wide-margin victory to advance.
Reports also say that the matches were going on simultaneously and Plateau and Police Machine were in contention for promotion. So it was no surprise that there was an obvious match-fixing scandal … and the winning teams were monitoring their scores.
The Nigerian Football Federation – enraged by the results – has since indefinitely suspended all four teams and dismissed the laughable scores. ‘It is unacceptable,’ fumed NFF Vice President Mike Umeh. ‘This is a scandal of huge proportions. The four teams involved are suspended immediately and indefinitely, pending further sanctions. We will investigate this matter thoroughly and get to the bottom of it.’
Added NFF Director of Competitions Mohammed Sanusi, ‘For now, all the match officials are suspended. The teams involved, their players and officials, coordinator and anyone found to have played some role in this despicable matter would be severely dealt with.’
FYI: The Guinness World record for the most goals scored by a team in a single match was set during the match between Arbroath and Bon Accord in 1885 which ended 36-0. It also doubles as the highest margin of defeat by any team.
