An 8-year old boy on Thursday evening intentionally shot and killed his elderly caregiver after playing the video game Grand Theft Auto, according to law enforcement officials in Slaughter, Louisiana.
According to the office of the Sheriff, the child shot the elderly woman Marie Smothers in the head as she was sitting inside their mobile home watching television.
‘Although a motive for the shooting is unknown at this time, investigators have learned that the juvenile suspect was playing a video game on the Play Station III “Grand Theft Auto IV”, a realistic game that has been associated with encouraging violence and awards points to players for killing people, just minutes before the homicide occurred,’ the Sheriff’s office said in a statement.
The boy, whose identity is protected because of his age, has been released to his parents and will not be charged with any crime, in accordance to Louisiana law. Police however, believe that he intentionally shot Smothers – who is almost 90-years old – but at the same time he had a ‘normal, loving, relationship’ with her.
The gun the boy used to commit the homicide is said to belong to the victim, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
It is unclear whether the shooting was influenced by the violent video game – which is rated ‘M’ (For Mature Audiences), recommended for people 17 years and older.
