A Chinese man who suffered from a nose trauma due to an accident last year is getting a new nose, which is being grown on his FOREHEAD.
According to doctors at Xiehe hospital in Fuzhou City, east of China’s Fujian Province, the 22-year old, nicknamed Xiaolian, suffered a severe nose trauma in a serious car accident back in August 2012. He then received basic treatment instead of the required plastic surgery due to financial constraints.
But after the nose wound became infected and surgeons determined it was already too late to perform any reconstructive surgery due to corrosion of nasal cartilage, the only option left was to grow a new nose – and the site of choice was his forehead.
So using cartilage taken from his ribs, a nose template was created and infused with skin tissue expander – a medical practice that has never been tried in the world. 9 months later, the new nose sprouted comfortably and is ready for transplant.
‘We have gone through the hardest step and now it is not difficult to carry out transplant surgery,’ said Guo Zhihui, Director of Plastic Surgery Department of Xiehe Hospital.
The transplant procedure, the Director said, will take place soon.
