President Obama says that if he were the owner of the Washington Redskins, he will ‘think of changing’ the team’s controversial name.
The Washington football team’s name has for a long time sparked outrage in the Indian American community, who find the word ‘redskin’ offensive.
Despite the ongoing government shutdown, Obama still found time to talk about the issue during an interview with The Associated Press when he was asked about the renewed controversy surrounding the name.
‘If I were the owner of the team and I knew that the name of my team — even if they’ve had a storied history — was offending a sizable group of people, I’d think about changing it,’ Obama said. ‘All these mascots and team names related to Native Americans… Native Americans feel pretty strongly about it. And I don’t know whether our attachment to a particular name should override the real, legitimate concerns that people have about these things.’
