A shocking picture of a rural Mexican woman who just gave birth in the lawn of a hospital who denied her medical help has caused an uproar in the country shortly after it surfaced in the media this week.
29-year old mother of two Irma Lopez was in labor and approached the Rural Health Center in San Felipe Jalapa de Diaz for help but was turned away by a nurse who told her that she was still 8 months pregnant and not ready for delivery.
According to Irma, she was told to come back the following day for checkup – but that proved not to be an option ‘cos 30 minutes later, her water broke and she was left with no option than to deliver the baby on the clinic lawn while standing, holding on to a building wall.
‘I didn’t want to deliver like this. It was so ugly and with so much pain,’ Lopez told AP, adding that she was alone during the birth because her husband was at that time still trying to get the hospital to admit her.
The eyewitness birth pic has forced the director of the hospital Dr. Adrian Cruz to be suspended by the government of the southern state of Oaxaca, who also announced on Wednesday that state and federal investigations into the October 2 incident has commenced.
And as for the baby, Lopez says, ‘I am naming him Salvador [Savior]. He really saved himself.’
