A 13-year old boy walking home from school was shot and killed after police thought he was carrying a real gun … while actually, it was a toy.
The incident happened on Tuesday afternoon in Sonoma County, California around 3.pm.
According to local reports, when Andy Lopez was spotted by deputies carrying what they thought was a real gun, they called for backup and ordered him to drop the gun. When he turned around, one cop opened fire, killing him on the spot.
According to Lt. Paul Henry, ‘One of the deputies described that as the subject was turning toward him the barrel of the assault rifle was rising up and turning in his direction’ and then fearing ‘for his safety, the safety of his partner, and the safety of the community members in the area’, opened fire and shot him ‘at least once’ … though eyewitnesses insist that he was shot up to seven times.
Police pronounced Lopez dead after handcuffing him on the ground and finding him unresponsive.
Police determined the supposed fake gun as a plastic handgun which Lopez strapped to his waist.
