Elwood, a New Jersey dog who was crowned the world’s ugliest dog way back in 2007 has died. He was aged 8 – or 57 in dog years.
The Chinese crested and Chihuahua mix species died Thanksgiving morning in an unexpected manner, says his owner Karen Quigley.
Elwood, unlike other similarly crowned dogs, became an internet sensation probably because of his excessive ugliness, and even starred in his own children’s book called Everybody Loves Elwood, which preaches about accepting people the way they are. He also appeared in over 200 events that helped raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for animal rescue groups and nonprofit animal organizations.
Elwood – or Yoda and ET as he was fondly called by fans – got his crown at the annual ugly dog contest at the Sonoma-Marin County Fair in California … a year after he had finished second.
According to Quigley, ‘The breeder was going to euthanize him because she thought he was too ugly to sell.’
But at the end, ‘He made people smile, he made them laugh and feel good. It was wonderful. He will truly be missed.’
