Police in Iceland on Tuesday shot and killed a man who was shooting at random out of his apartment window … and the day has gone down in history as the first time ever that the country’s police has killed a human being.
Similarly, the unidentified man has become the first person to die from a police bullet in the country’s 70-year old history.
The historic incident took place at the gunman’s Reykjavik home, when police were trying to stop the random shooting by firing tear gas into the apartment.
According to local reports, officers, flanked by special forces, then entered the 59-year old man’s apartment to disarm him, but the suspect opened fire on them, injuring two of the special forces men.
So officers were forced to put the man down … and he was pronounced dead at a hospital moments later.
The motive behind the man’s shooting remains unclear.
Icelandic police chief Haraldur Johannessen said in a statement, ‘Police regret this incident and would like to extend their condolences to the family of the man.’
