In what we can call adding insult to an injury recently caused by a ‘fake’ interpreter, a billboard set up in India to honor Nelson Mandela ended up mistakenly honoring actor Morgan Freeman – who famously portrayed the late anti-apartheid hero in a 2009 movie called Invictus.
An Indian businessman named Chandrashekhar financed the large billboard which was hoisted on the side of a road in Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu, featuring a nicely-cut photo of a smiling Freeman looming over smaller pics of Martin Luther King Jr., Mahatma Gandhi and Mother Teresa.
‘We should be proud that we were part of an era when they lived,’ reads the billboard message written in Tamil.
Later, the red-faced Chandrashekhar told AFP that the major blunder was the designer’s fault, and that he did not know how the gaffe happened.
‘We will replace it with the correct picture of Mandela,’ he said.
