A Minnesota man died after jumping into the ice-cold Chicago River to retrieve his phone, Chicago police said.
The 26-year old unidentified man from St Paul was walking along the river walk with two friends when he mistakenly dropped his phone into the river below.
According to police, the man immediately jumped over the security railing while going after his phone, ultimately landing inside the frozen water. His two companions also jumped in after him in a vain attempt to rescue him.
Diver rescue teams later pulled the phone owner and a 23-year old male from the river. The other companion who jumped in with them – a 21-year old female – is still missing, and is presumed dead.
The 23-year old is alive and in a stable condition in hospital.
‘We continued efforts for over an hour, rotating divers, searched for the final victim, were unsuccessful, and now the scene is turned over to the Chicago police for recovery,’ a rep for the Chicago Fire Department told WLS.
