A domestic fowl in Makurdi, Nigeria allegedly started speaking Arabic before getting slaughtered, causing residents to flee in panic.
Police in the Benue State capital said the incident happened in the local Wadata market in the city on Thursday afternoon.
According to eyewitnesses, the news spread like wildfire, causing a great number of people to gather round the Division A police station to see the ‘talking’ fowl, which was reportedly in police custody. The crowd was so large that police had to use tear gas to disperse them to clear the way for normal traffic.
‘I have not seen the chicken myself,’ said Aishetu, a woman in the area. ‘I heard that police have taken it into custody and that is why the station is so crowded. Everybody wants to see it talk.’
However, Superintendent of Police Daniel Ezeala dismissed the talking fowl claim, saying it was a rumor started by ‘mischief makers’.
‘How can a fowl talk?’ he queried, according to Daily Trust. ‘There is nothing like that because it is unnatural for animals to talk. It is the handiwork of mischief makers who wanted to displace traders and loot their wares in the market.’
