A political debate in Northern India ended in horror on Monday after a man set himself on fire before hugging a politician giving a speech at the televised event.
According to police, the incident happened at a park in Sultanpur. The spectator, identified as Durgesh Kumar Singh, was said to have emerged from a crowd of around 150 people and doused himself with gasoline. Then he set himself on fire, rushed forward and hugged Bahujan Samaj Party leader Kamruzzama Fauji, who was giving a speech at that time.
Both men were rushed to the hospital, where Singh later died of severe burns that covered 95 per cent of his body. Fauji is in critical condition, with 75 percent of his body badly burned.
Two other local politicians taking part in the show, Ram Kumar Singh and Chowdhary Hriday Ram Verma, sustained minor burns while trying to save the pair.
As at the time of this report, no one knows exactly the motive behind the brazen attack.
