Recently, a 13-year old Indian girl hanged herself after her mother ordered her to close her Facebook account because the site was becoming an addiction.
36-year old Mohana Gupita had told her daughter Aditi before she went to work that fateful day, ‘I want your Facebook account closed by the time I return home.’ This was because her daughter has been spending too much time chatting with her friends on the site instead of facing other more important activities.
‘I generally leave for work around 9.30am. But my husband left early and my older son was at his grandmother’s house for the holidays,’ she said. ‘When I was about to leave, my daughter was sitting in front of the computer. I was angry because she was spending a lot of time on social networking. I told her she was too young to be on Facebook and was wasting her time.’
However, Mrs Gupita returned home four hours later to see her daughter hanging in her bedroom, dead.
The devastated mom says she couldn’t believe that her daughter could take her own life over ‘something so trivial.’
This is definitely not the first time suicides like this has happened in India. As ENTmania! reported last year, a teenage girl took her own life after her parents banned her from Facebook.
