Meet 2-year old Peanut the mutt, who was recently crowned the World’s Ugliest Dog.
Peanut competed against 29 other ugly dogs at the Sonoma-Marin Fair on Friday, where a panel of three judges assessed them based on special or unusual features, personality, as well as their ‘natural ugliness.’
Peanut – who was said to be severely burned as a puppy – captured the heart of the panel, who declared him winner after an online poll voted overwhelmingly for him.
Peanut’s owner, Holly Chandler of Greenville, North Carolina, hoped his win will raise awareness about animal abuse. ‘We’re trying to use him as a poster child for what can happen to animals who are abused.’
She also said she plans to use the $1,500 prize Peanut won to pay for other animals’ veterinary bills.
Peanut now succeeds previous crown holder Elwood the chihuahua, who died in Thanksgiving morning last year at age 8.
