Cops from Alhambra Police department, California were told to use a squad car to pursue a tortoise who had escaped from its owners’ house on Saturday.
According to the police report, neighbors had seen the African sulcata tortoise (aka Clark) making its escape while the owners were away in a baseball game. After being alerted, two cops were then sent out to chase the slowest animal in the world with a squad car.
‘The tortoise did try to make a run for it; but, our officers are pretty fast. Almost had a pursuit!’ the PD wrote on its Facebook page. ‘It took two officers to take this guy into custody because it weighs about 150 pounds [68.5 kg] and our cuffs . . . well not practical in this situation.’
Clark was reunited with its owners the next day.
Cops reportedly chased the tortoise at 1mph … the lowest speed chase ever recorded in the department’s history.
