Jaycee Chan, son of movie superstar Jackie Chan, was on Thursday last week arrested in Beijing for weed possession.
The 31-year old actor was picked up after cops found 100 grams of marijuana in his home. Traces of the substance was also detected in his system, cops said on Monday.
Chan’s arrest is part of the renewed effort by the Chinese government to fight illegal drug use, which has increased significantly in the past two decades. According to the Associated Press, over 7,800 people have been arrested in Beijing alone ever since the operation began in June this year.
Chan was detained along with fellow movie star Kai Ko that day, and they are not the only celebrities that have been detained ever since the crackdown began.
In a statement issued by his management M’Stones International, Chan has apologized for the ‘social impact’ his arrest caused, and has promised to stop his drug habits. His management also said they will ‘supervise his rehabilitation and help him return to the right path.’
If charged, Chan faces up to 3 years in jail.
