It has emerged that NBC refused to air a suicide prevention public service announcement after Robin Williams Emmys tribute.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the National Suicide Prevention Network asked NBC execs to air its ‘lifeline’ number after Billy Crystal finished paying tribute to the late actor, but NBC declined, saying that they were out to celebrate his life and not to dwell on ‘the way he died.’
‘The Emmys telecast is a celebration, and the ‘In Memoriam’ section of our show is an important one,’ an NBC spokesperson told THR in a statement. ‘We believe we honored Robin in the right away. Suicide is a serious issue, but we decided not to dwell on that — or its prevention — in this particular forum.’
Robin Williams committed suicide earlier this month at age 63. Video of his Emmys tribute can be watched below.
