Joan Rivers has been placed on a medically induced coma after she stopped breathing during throat surgery on Thursday.
The 81-year old comedienne had stopped breathing while surgeons operated on her vocal cords … and was rushed to the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York.
The NYPD first described her condition as ‘critical’, and according to TMZ, her heart even stopped beating at a point. As of Friday, her condition has been upgraded to either ‘critical but stable’ or just ‘stable’.
After news of her medical condition broke, Joan’s daughter Melissa flew from Los Angeles to New York to be with her mother. Later that night, she released a statement which reads, ‘I want to thank everyone for the overwhelming love and support for my mother. She is resting comfortably and is with our family. We ask that you continue to keep her in your thoughts and prayers.’
Doctors expect to bring Rivers out of coma over the weekend. Then they can assess haw much damaged has been caused by the time she spent not breathing.
