Kanye West has responded to Jay Pharaoh spoofing him at the MTV Video Music Awards, saying that he is ‘not a joke’ and should not be played with.
The rapper was performing at the Made in America Music festival over the weekend, where he dedicated one of his characteristic ranting pauses to addressing the comedian’s portrayal of him at the VMAs.
During the rant, West told the audience that he contacted Pharaoh to say that while he ‘appreciated’ his mimicry, he needed to explain ‘what I went through to get to that position.’
‘So we ain’t gonna have no black comedians going onstage spoofing the people that’s working hard, and helping the next man out,’ West said.
‘It’s fine and funny and everything, but don’t distract from our vision,’ he said. ‘It’s not a joke what we do up here. This music that we do is not a joke. What we do culturally is not a joke.’
He also brought up the issue of interracial relationships, bringing up his marriage to Kim Kardashian and the harassment of a white kid in an all-black school.
