Reddit has banned its users from posting the nude photos of several celebrities, which got leaked by hackers last week Sunday.
As you will remember, the huge nude photo leak scandal affected the likes of Jennifer Lawrence, Victoria Justice, Kate Upton, Kristen Dunst and a host of others including Olympian McKayla Maroney, who claimed her nude photos were taken while she was still underage.
Now Reddit, apparently alarmed by Maroney’s underage claim (which will get the site in big trouble for distributing child pornography), has stepped up the crackdown by shutting down Fappening, the subreddit where all the nude photos were posted.
Writing in a blog post, Reddit’s CEO Yishani Wong said, ‘While current US law does not prohibit (Reddit) linking to stolen materials, we deplore the theft of these images and we do not condone their widespread distribution.’
‘Nevertheless, reddit’s platform is structurally based on the ability for people to distribute, promote, and highlight textual materials as well as links to images and other media.
‘We understand the harm that misusing our site does to the victims of this theft, and we deeply sympathize.’
Wong also explained that the reason for the delay in shutting down the message board was because of freedom of speech issues.
