Oscar Pistorius is not guilty of intentionally murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp last year, a court ruled on Thursday.
In his verdict, Judge Thokozile Masipa dismissed the argument of the prosecutors on the grounds that it was heavily influenced by media coverage of the tragic Valentine’s Day incident.
The Paralympian was previously indicted for premeditated murder in August last year.
Pistorius is not in the clear however. He could still be found guilty of culpable homicide. But today’s verdict has freed him from the most serious charge he had faced over the murder.
Pistorius shot and killed Steenkamp from his bedroom while she was in his bathroom. He maintains he honestly thought that he was shooting an intruder, and says he never intended to kill her
The ‘Blade Runner’, who has been an emotional mess ever since the whole thing began wept as the verdict was read.
The trial continues on Friday.
