A British autistic teen who was influenced by Showtime TV series Dexter to kill and dismember his girlfriend has been jailed for 25 years.
17-year old Steven Miles was 16 when he stabbed 17-year old Elizabeth Thomas in his family home, and then went about cutting up her body limb by limb Dexter style using his father’s tree-surgical tools. An hour after he finished, he then showed his grotesque handwork to his sister and confessed.
During the court hearing that took place on Thursday, it was revealed that Miles told his family that ‘Ed’ had ordered him to kill Thomas as his ‘project’. He also told his attorneys that he and ‘Ed’ had a ‘lot of similarities’.
Describing Thomas’ murder as ‘chilling, blood-curdling and sustained,’ Miles’ lawyer told the court that he ‘pleaded guilty to a horrendous crime which is beyond belief because of its horrific nature.’
Added the lawyer:
This was a truly gruesome killing ripped from the pages of a hit TV script. The evidence points to the defendant trying to emulate the actions of the character Dexter, who he idolized. The case is a sad testament to the perils of how young people can become entrenched in modern TV blockbusters involving violence which shockingly led to a copycat killing in real life.
Miles – who showed no emotion whatsoever during the sentencing btw – was hit with 25 years in prison. He only escaped the mandatory life sentence because he is still a minor.
This is not the first time people convicted of murder have cited Dexter as their inspiration. As ENTmania! reported, ‘Craiglist killer’ Miranda Barbour – recently jailed for life for seducing a man over Craiglist and then killing him – claimed she murdered ‘bad people’ like Dexter – but she was fuelled by her ties to Satanism.
There are other examples, some of which have been documented by The Daily Mail.
