Anna Wintour has revealed the real reason why she controversially put Kim Kardashian and Kanye West on the respected Vogue cover last April.
Speaking at The Museum of Metropolitan Art this week, the famed fashion mag editor said that even though she finds the couple ‘not deeply tasteful’, she decided to put them anyway because they generate buzz, which is good for sales.
‘I think if we just remain deeply tasteful and put deeply tasteful people on the cover, it would be a rather boring magazine,’ was her explanation. She added that ‘now and again one has to do things like that,’ otherwise ‘nobody would talk about us. It’s very important that people talk about us.’
Well Wintour’s business plan worked out for her in terms of the buzz it generated, but the same cannot be said of the sales. That Vogue issue sold a paltry 300,000 copies, and even Kim Kardashian herself was seen buying scores of copies of the magazine in an attempt to increase the number of sales.
