Kanye West jokingly reenacted his 2009 infamous interruption of Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech at Sunday’s Grammy Awards … but then still vented his frustration during an E! interview after the ceremony.
For those who didn’t watch the awards show last night, Beck beat Beyonce to win the much-coveted Album of the Year Award … and as he was about to give his acceptance speech, West ran up the stage, made straight to the mic, but sharply changed his mind and backed down, a big smile plastered on his face.
But while speaking to an E! correspondent after the show, the rapper let out a long rant that summarized just how he was feeling when he impulsively ran up the stage:
I don’t even know what he said, all I know is if the Grammys want real artists to keep coming back, they need to stop playing with us. We ain’t gonna play with them no more. ‘Flawless,’ Beyoncé video. Beck needs to respect artistry and he should have given his award to Beyoncé, and at this point, we tired of it.
Because what happens is, when you keep on diminishing art and not respecting the craft and smacking people in the face after they deliver monumental feats of music, you’re disrespectful to inspiration, and we as musicians have to inspire people who go to work every day and they listen to that Beyoncé album and they feel like it takes them to another place.
Then they do this whole promotional event… and they’re running music over somebody’s speech, the artist, because they want commercial advertising. Like, no, we not playing with them no more! By the way, I got my wife, my daughter and my clothing line, so I’m not going to do nothing to put my daughter at risk but I am here to fight for creativity. That’s the reason why I didn’t say anything tonight. But you all know what it meant when ‘Ye walks on the stage.
Reacting to the diss, Beck told reporters, ‘You can’t please everybody, man. I still love him and think he’s genius. I aspire to do what he does.’ And as for Beyonce not winning the award, he said, ‘Absolutely I thought she was going to win. Come on, she’s Beyonce!’
Kanye arrived in New York from Los Angeles on Monday, and at the airport a group of paparazzi asked him if his comments on Beck needing to ‘respect artistry’ meant he was implying Beck wasn’t an artist.
‘No, I wasn’t saying Beck, I was saying the Grammys!’ the rapper replied. ‘Beck knows that Beyonce should have won … Come on, man, I love Beck. But he ain’t have Album of the Year.’
What do you think?
