Matthew McConaughey’s new movie Sea of Trees was received with loud boos after it screened at the Cannes Film Festival on Friday.
The movie, in which Matthew plays a guy who meets a man intent on committing suicide in Japan’s famed Sea of Trees, was labelled by critics as ‘a profound cultural insult’ and ‘fantastically annoying and dishonest terk-jerker.’ The loud boos came as the credits of the film rolled.
Speaking later at a press conference after the screening, Matthew declared that he liked the film and everyone ‘has as much right to boo as they do to ovate.’
‘I’m happy to be here. I like the film,’ he said. ‘It was a happy day to hear that it had got in. It’s exciting to come support work that I got to do with these people. This is fun, this is dessert – no matter what. We’ve declared now; thanks for having us. We enjoyed it.’
