Robert De Niro delivered what is touted as the greatest commencement speech ever at NYU Tisch School of the Arts on Friday, where he told the graduates, ‘You’ve made it … and you’re f**ked.’
The Oscar-winning actor told the graduates how unstable and emotionally depressing their career choice can be, saying that they would have been better off if they had chosen other professions like medicine, accounting and even law.
Welcoming them to ‘a lifetime of rejection,’ the actor said that graduates of the afore-mentioned professions probably ‘used reason and logic and common sense to research a career,’ while the arts grads ‘discovered a talent, developed an ambition, and recognized your passion.’ He added however, ‘When it comes to the arts, passion should always trump common sense. Yeah, you’re f**ked. The good news is, that’s not a bad place to start.’
At the end, it was a frank speech delivered by one of the biggest names in the biz.
