A pigeon has been jailed in India under the suspicion that it was spying for Pakistan, it has been reported.
According to local reports, the bird was arrested after they found a note with an indecipherable Urdu writing and what was initially thought to be a Pakistani phone number attached to its wings. The pigeon was also carrying a small wired object.
The bird was caught by local residents on Thursday and handed over to police shortly after it perched on a house in a village 4 km away from the Pakistani border. Police even did an X-ray of the pigeon … and found nothing suspicious. However, they were not convinced about the bird’s harmlessness, so they decided to place it under armed guard.
‘Nothing adverse has been found, but we have kept the bird in our custody,’ Superintendent Rakesh Kaushal told the Indian Times. ‘This is a rare instance of a bird from Pakistan being spotted here. We have caught a few spies here. The area is sensitive, given its proximity to Jammu, where infiltration is quite common.’
