Serena Williams is now a 20-time Grand Slam winner after beating Lucie Safarova to win the French Open on Saturday.
The 33-year old tennis legend beat the 28-year old Czech 6-3, 6-7 (2), 6-2 to clinch her 3rd French Open title, cementing her place as one of the most successful women’s tennis players of all time.
At the beginning of the bout, it seemed as if Williams would easily cruise to the title. But Safarova proved to be an opponent to beat after coming from behind to beat Williams in the second set, prompting the American to up her game in the last set to secure the title.
Her win now makes her the second female tennis player with the most Grand Slam titles, just 2 titles behind Germany’s Steffi Graf.
