A mother in South Africa was horrified to the point of contemplating suicide after she found out that her son’s gay lover put her phone number online asking people to go have sex with her … because she disapproved of their relationship.
46-year-old Vanitha Maharaj of South Africa told the Durban Regional Court that she disapproved of her son’s gay relationship with Ezren Veerabuthran and the latter in anger, posted numerous messages on social media with her phone number, asking people to go have sex with a ‘free b**ch.’ (Maharaj is divorced.)
As a result of the public shaming, Maharaj claims her reputation has been damaged as well as her relationship with the rest of her family. She also said she even thought about committing suicide due to the numerous responses she has, and is still receiving from people who saw the messages.
Veerabuthran pleaded guilty to one charge of criminal defamation and one charge of crimen injuria (‘unlawfully, intentionally and seriously impairing the dignity of another’). Even though Maharaj was seeking 15,000 rand (around $1,200) in damages, the judge ordered him to attend anger management classes, saying that if he offends again he will have to pay Maharaj R5,000 ($400) in compensation.
