A man from Somerset, England, is currently on trial for allegedly raping and killing his own mother while high on cocaine and alcohol.
Local news outlets report that 27-year old Alex McDonald downed four bottles off alcohol at a wine-tasting event and snorted cocaine before going home to murder his 57-year old mother Catherine, who was sleeping at that time.
Prosecutor Simon Laws QC told the jury that McDonald, an only child, was ‘in a state of sexual excitement’ when he returned home to his mother that fateful night last September. He went on to give graphic details of what he did to his mother (via Metro.co.uk):
Mr Laws told the court McDonald had used knitting needles to stab her in the neck and one was still in place, and a pathologist said she was still alive when this happened.
There were scratches and bruises on her face, body, arms, legs and neck as she struggled for survival in the attack.
Mr Laws said on her neck there were also small cuts which had been caused by a pair of nail scissors used to poke and prod her neck.
He told the jury McDonald used the scissors to ‘force her to submit to a sexual assault’ and Mr Laws said he raped her.
A condom was found and DNA was discovered on the victim. He said afterwards he fetched a knife from the kitchen to stab his mother and strangle her with the cable.
After attempting to clear the murder scene, McDonald tried to flee in his mom’s car with his passport … but ended up crashing the car and getting arrested minutes later by police.
Laws said McDonald ‘knew perfectly well what he had done’ because he texted his ex-girlfriend at one point, telling her that he either be dead soon or be in jail. During the police interview, he ‘appeared nonchalant’ throughout and did not answer their questions. When he was told that he raped his mother, he allegedly replied that it was ‘a bit of a shock to him.’
McDonald has pleaded guilty to manslaughter and not guilty to murder.
