8-time hot dog eating champion Joey Chestnut has lost his title to Matt ‘Megatoad’ Stonie in the Nathan’s Annual Hot Dog Eating Contest on Saturday.
The reigning champ managed to take down 60 hot dogs in 10 minutes, but his younger rival gobbled 62 to break his eight-year streak, just as Chestnut ended Takeru Kobayashi’s six-year streak in 2007.
Chestnut’s loss to Stonie has generated a lot of reactions, with many people and media outlets describing it as ‘stunning’ and ‘a huge upset.’ Well it should have been expected because last year, the 23-year old Californian almost beat the legendary eater, but was five wieners behind.
Stonie definitely has the credentials to clinch the title, as he currently holds the records for eating 182 slices of bacon in 5 minutes and 5 pounds of birthday cake in 9 minutes. However, Chestnut is still the king as far as hot dogs are concerned, as he holds the all time record of the most hot dogs eaten in 10 minutes (69), which he set in 2013.
