A man in Minneapolis was last week sentenced to 271/2 years in prison for shooting 3 women who did not sing ‘happy birthday’ to his girlfriend.
The incident occurred in July last year at another person’s birthday party. 20-year old Delonte Ahshone Thomas had asked the crowd to sing the birthday song to his girlfriend – who shares the same date with the celebrant – but when they refused, he stormed off and returned 20 minutes with a gun.
The court heard that Thomas opened fire on the guests at random, hitting three women multiple times in the process. One got shot nine times in her upper arm, pelvis abdomen, thigh, back and buttocks, the second eight times, and the third nine times on her legs. All survived the attack.
Thomas was convicted on 3 counts of attempted murder, and sentenced to 333 months in prison. During his sentencing, he said he had no recollection of what happened.
‘Everybody makes mistakes and everybody deserves a second chance,’ he told the court. ‘I don’t recall having a gun. I don’t recall shooting. I just hope to get some type of mercy here.’
