Meet Estela Melendez, a 91-year old Chilean woman who has been carrying a foetus in her womb for more than 60 years.
Doctors examining her in La Boca, Chile, discovered a large mass in her womb … and concluded that it was a tumor that needed to be removed. But an X-ray examination revealed that the ‘tumor’ was in fact a calcified foetus, which is estimated to have been conceived over 60 years ago.
This discovery is especially heartbreaking because according to Estela, she and her husband of 74 years Manuel Gonzalez had been trying to have a baby without success. She told CNN that they had both ‘suffered tremendously’ because of this … and now this calcified foetus will now serve as a reminder of the baby they desperately longed for. Gonzalez died in January aged 91.
Doctors have determined that the foetus poses no health risk, and have decided not to remove it because of the surgical risks involved considering her advanced age.
