A total of 135 pigs died in a farm in Aargau, Switzerland after inhaling gas produced from their own excrement.
According to local reports, the pigs died after a farm worker accidentally switched on a methane gas pipeline running in the piggery.
The incident, which happened in June but just came to light this week, has resulted in calls from an animal rights group to sanction the farm for treating their pigs inhumanely and negligently.
But the owner of the farm has brushed off the accusations by the animal rights groups, telling local outlet Tele M1 that he’s upset about the death of the pigs. He also dismissed a series of photos posted by animal rights group VgT (Association against Animal Factories Switzerland) which supposedly shows pig torture, saying that they were doctored.
VgT maintains that the pigs died under ‘mysterious circumstances’ that was caused by the farm’s maltreatment.
